Hanging On to Summer in Connecticut

Connecticut fall may be gorgeous, but I’ll always be a summer girl at heart. Flip flops, long sunsets, and warm sunshine make me happiest—so why does summer always feel too short?

This morning I stepped outside with Moose, coffee in hand, and what do I see sitting on my porch? An orange leaf. Already. Not happy! It’s only August, and while I love a good fall foliage drive as much as the next Connecticut girl, I am not ready to trade my flip flops for boots just yet.

Here in Connecticut, the seasons change fast – sometimes too fast. The trees are already starting to turn, a few brave leaves drifting to the ground, reminding me that fall is knocking at the door. And while fall in New England is stunning (pumpkins, apple picking, cozy sweaters, all the clichés and then some), it always leads to winter. Snow. Ice. Cold. Did I mention cold?

And here’s the truth: I am a summer girl through and through.

Why Summer Will Always Have My Heart

  • Flip flops forever. Give me open-toed shoes and sandy feet over boots and socks any day.
  • Warm evenings. There’s nothing better than lingering outside when the sun sets late, the sky painted pink and orange, and the crickets chirping in the background.
  • The healing sunshine. There’s something about the warm sun that makes my bones feel better. Truly. I can feel it in my soul.
  • The pace of life. Summer feels freer, lighter, more relaxed – even on the busiest days.

If I had it my way, summer would be the longest season here in Connecticut. Instead, it always feels too short, slipping through my fingers faster than I can savor it.

Connecticut’s Seasons: A Love/Hate Relationship

Don’t get me wrong – I adore a Connecticut autumn. Driving past the fiery hillsides, apple cider in hand, is one of life’s greatest joys. But here’s the problem: autumn is just the opening act for winter. And winter means shoveling snow, layering up, scraping ice off the windshield, and wishing for that warm sun again.

I always find myself clinging to those last days of August, hoping summer will linger just a little longer. When I hear the cicadas buzzing in the evening, it’s like they’re singing a reminder: soak this in, because soon the air will turn crisp, and then cold.

A Summer Girl Forever

So yes, I’ll enjoy the pumpkin patches, the cozy blankets, and the golden leaves when fall comes. But deep down, I’ll be counting the days until summer returns. I’ll be holding on to my flip flops, chasing those warm sunsets, and reminding myself that even when the leaves fall, summer always finds its way back again.

Until then, I’ll be the girl glaring at the first orange leaf on my porch and hoping the sunshine sticks around a little longer.
