Why Every Home Cook Needs a Dutch Oven

My Dutch oven is one of my most-used kitchen tools – and for good reason. From soups and stews to braises and saucy meatballs, this pot can do it all.

Why Every Home Cook Needs a Dutch Oven

There are certain kitchen tools I rely on almost daily – the ones I don’t even bother putting away because I know I’ll be reaching for them again tomorrow. My Dutch ovens (yes, plural!) are at the top of that list. I have them in different sizes and I use them for just about everything – except bread. Bread is another song, with different equipment. We’ll talk about making bread another day, I promise!

But when it comes to soups, stews, braises, and saucy, slow-cooked comfort food? My Dutch oven is my ride-or-die.

So, What Is a Dutch Oven?

A Dutch oven is a heavy-duty, cast iron pot – usually enamel-coated – that comes with a tight-fitting lid. It’s known for its ability to retain heat and cook food evenly. It’s kind of like the slow cooker’s cooler, stovetop-friendly cousin.

The beauty of it? You can sear, simmer, sauté, and roast all in one pot.

Why I Love Dutch Oven Cooking

  • Soup season MVP: I’m a soup lover all year round (especially my classic minestrone), and nothing beats the slow simmer you get in a Dutch oven.
  • One-pot dinners made easy: Meatballs and sausage in sauce? Start them on the stove and let those wonderful smells stink up your house! Let the flavors do their thing.
  • Braises that melt in your mouth: From beef stew to wine-braised chicken thighs – slow cooking in a Dutch oven makes magic happen.
  • Even heat = better results: No hot spots, no scorched bottoms – just consistent, steady cooking.
  • Less cleanup: Sear, sauté, simmer, and serve all from the same pot. I mean, what’s not to love?

These are on regular rotation in my kitchen – and they all come together beautifully in a Dutch oven:

I could go on and on!  If it simmers, it’s going in the Dutch oven!

What Size Should You Get?

If you’re just starting out, go for a 5.5 to 6-quart size. It’s the Goldilocks of Dutch ovens – not too big, not too small, just right. That size will handle soups, stews, and family-sized dinners with no problem.

That said, I have a few sizes:

  • A larger 7-quart for big batches and Sunday dinners
  • A medium 5.5-quart for everyday meals
  • A little 3.5-quart that’s perfect for sides or small batches of sauce

And yes, they’re all very well-loved.

Tips for Cooking with a Dutch Oven

  • Don’t preheat it empty – cast iron can crack under high direct heat
  • Use wooden or silicone utensils – protect that enamel coating!
  • Let it cool before washing – thermal shock is a real thing
  • It’s heavy – I mean, you’ll get an arm workout. Consider it bonus cardio.

Final Thoughts

A Dutch oven is the ultimate multitasker. It makes weeknight dinners easier, weekend cooking more flavorful, and comfort food next level. I’ve had mine for years, and they just keep getting better with age (like a good sauce … or a good playlist).

If you’ve been thinking about getting one, this is your sign. If you already have one, dust it off and let it shine!

Let me know in the comments what YOU love making in your Dutch oven! I always love seeing what you’re cooking.
